O'Grady grew up in Wheaton, Illinois and graduated from the North High School of Wheaton in 1981. She is the daughter of Jan O'Grady (a financial planner) as well as Jim O'Grady. Her parents raised her within Wheaton (Illinois) and she graduated in 1981 from North High School of Wheaton. She was a part of a couple of commercials on television, but then moved from Illinois to Los Angeles. Her career started as an actress in commercials and models with Montgomery Ward. She was a part of the 1988 romantic comedic film She's Having a Baby. She also played a part in ABC Drama China Beach with Dana Delany. The actress has also appeared as a guest in independent films and television shows. Her debut role on television was as Donna Abandando on the ABC police series NYPD Blue. O'Grady was the large-haired squad secretary from 1993 to 1996. Each year received an Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting actress in Drama Series. In 1995, O'Grady was awarded the Screen Actors Guild Award Outstanding Ensemble Performance in a Drama Series along with the cast.
