O'Neil she was in her high school times during the auditions, volunteered in the 3rd season of Canadian Idol in the beginning of 2005. She was able to make it into the top tier of contestants after the judges praised her voice. O'Neil was given high praise by the judges but suffered significant losses in the Top 10 weeks and Top 9 of the Finals in which she was relegated to the bottom 3 and bottom 2 in both cases. The judges were astonished by the results and encouraged viewers to show support for singers with impressive singing skills similar to Melissa. O'Neil did not make it to the top 3 after numerous outstanding performance. O'Neil and Rex Goudie and Werner delivered two spectacular performances in September 2005. Werner reportedly said that the headlines would state that O'Neil beat Goudie and become the third Canadian Idol. She was the first female, and the youngest winner in time of the show. O'Neil received a phone call immediately from Canadian Premier Paul Martin, congratulating on her victory on Canadian Idol.
